Voice Over IP Implementation
Taxonomy Code: TP-3350.8500-900
Programs that help nonprofit organizations, small businesses and other groups evaluate the feasibility of implementing Voice over IP (VoIP) technology; and select, install and effectively use the VoIP network architecture that best meets their needs. VoIP allows voice, fax images, data and multimedia traffic to be transmitted over a single Internet Protocol (IP) based network infrastructure which frees the organization from the difficulties of dealing with separate voice, long distance and data networks and their respective service providers, and allows them to choose the specific bandwidth they need. Rather than paying expensive long distance charges, VoIP allows the organization to use the Internet, company intranets or other existing infrastructures such as dedicated lines rather than the public switched telephone network (PSTN) to transmit and receive voice messages using a protocol which translates analog signals to digital ones upon transmission and then back into voice upon reception. Both organizations must have equipment which translates the signals.
