Firearm Restraining Orders
Taxonomy Code: FT-6940.2000
Programs that help obtain an order from the police or the courts which temporarily prohibits individuals from purchasing or possessing firearms because they have been identified as someone who poses a danger to themselves or others. Families, household members, select community members, and law enforcement may petition for this order to prevent gun violence. This order may also apply to individuals who have been admitted to an inpatient psychiatric care facility, who are the subject of a domestic violence restraining order, or have been convicted of a felony or domestic violence misdemeanor.
